Thursday July 18th, 2024 - 7:30PM - Southern Rhone Tasting
Our next tasting will be 7:30PM on Monday July 18th and will feature red wines from the Rhone Valley. The Rhone Valley in Southern France is a long valley and really two distinct sub-regions. The Northern Rhone is in a narrow valley with very steep walls and only one red grape: Syrah, and just a few white grapes (Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne).
The Southern Rhone Valley is much wider, has a more Provencal climate, and is subject to the Mistral winds that blow at an average of 60 mph (hurricanes start at 70) for 150 days of the year. In addition to Syrah the south has the red grapes Grenache (the primary grape in the south) and Mourvedre as well as the "four Cs": Carignan, Cinsaut, Clairette, and Counoise. The Southern Rhone is home to Chateauneuf-du-Pape, one of the better known wines from France. We will try to mix up the appellations a bit so you can get an idea of the variety available from this region. The cost will be our usual $30 for members and $35 for non-members.
Members get a preferential right to sign up but we do allow up to four non-members sign up during the member signup period.
